Gilt lettering to spine, gilt decoration of globe on front board, black decorative edging on front and back boards, Harper Bros. device on back board. General light wear to cloth rubbing to corners and fraying to spine edges, with 1/4 by 3/4 inch chip from cloth at edge of top spine. Small white paint drop on lower right corner of front board. Brown endpapers, with paper starting over lower front hinge, underlying binding holding sound. Owner info on front endpaper. Text clean and unmarked with light age-toning along edges. Several dog-eared corners in Contents section at front. Translated from the French by B.B. Woodward. Frontis PL. 1 double page color map of the globe as drawn by A. Vuillemin, with additional 230 maps inserted in the text and 23 single and double page maps printed in color. All maps and illustrations clean, bright, intact. Interior Very Good. Text divided in parts, with many chapters per part: The Earth as a Planet, The Land, The Circulation of Water, Subterranean Forces. Elisee Reclus [1830-1907], also known as Jean Jacques Elisee Reclus, was a repected academic, scientist and skilled geographer, brother to fellow French geographer Onsime Reclus and a student of Karl Ritter. He was also a noted French revolutionary, social ecologist, vegetarian and anarchist. His Nouvelle Geographie Universelle earned him the title of Father of Modern Geography. #768.
